An elite of young, free people led by Oda and Christian Krohg and Frits Thaulow. With them came the whole herd of Christiania's bohemians, visual artists and literati. To idyllic Hvitsten came government attorney Lasson with his entourage of beautiful and gifted daughters. The steam engines, the technological revolution, brought them out into nature, transported out on the Christianiafjord. It was a golden age both for the city's bourgeoisie and for the artists.
The golden age of Norwegian art at the end of the 19th century came to Hvitsten by coal and steam, by liner on the fjord and by train. Almost everyone from the heyday of Norwegian art worked and lived an artistic life here - Edvard Munch, Christian Krohg, Frits Thaulow, Oscar Wergeland, Hans Gude and Theodor Kittelsen, to name a few.
